Besides the international schools in the area and of course the fully local, Dutch schools, your children can also opt for a bilingual program. Some cities will only offer this form of education for secondary education, other cities for primary and secondary.
Although the majority of the lessons will be taught in English, some will be taught (partially) in Dutch. It is there for necessary that your child will speak Dutch at a certain level. Also, at the secondary schools subjects like the foreign languages (French, German) will be taught in that language and Dutch, most of the communication with parents will be in Dutch and the bilingual program will only be given for the first three years. The final exams will be held in Dutch.
A few examples of the bilingual schools in our area are:
Montessori College Twente
This school in Hengelo offers Dutch-English bilingual secondary education (TweeTalig Onderwijs or TTO) during the first 3 years. The “HAVO – VWO” stream uses the immersion method where English is spoken as early as possible and next to extra English language classes, many subjects are taught in English. Students can obtain their Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English in year 3 and the International Baccalaureate in year six.
